Who is this course for?
The Tactical Driving Course (OVR) is intended for private researchers, observers and tactically operating professionals who want to tailor their driving skills to the specialist nature of observation and shadow work.
The course is suitable for both private investigators and professionals working in government services such as the FIOD, police, defense or inspection services, who need training in unobtrusive and safe driving under operational conditions.
What are the pre-education requirements?
The prerequisites for participating in the Tactical Driving Course (OVR) are as follows:
- Valid B and/or A driving license
- Affinity with observational work
- Private Investigator Diploma.
- Good command of the Dutch language.
- Willingness to participate in a selection process

The Tactical Driving Course (OVR) is offered at hbo(+) level.
What is the study load?
The course load for the Tactical Driving Course (OVR) is 3 teaching days, each averaging 6 to 8 hours per day, making the total study load approximately 18 hours.
What am I going to learn?
During the Tactical Driving Course (OVR), you will develop specialist driving skills that are essential for safe, smooth and unobtrusive operation during observational work. You will learn:
- Vehicle knowledge: insight into tire types (summer/winter), vehicle configurations and drive types.
- Vehicle inspection: what to look for when inspecting before deployment.
- Traffic insight: reading the “language of the road” and anticipating it.
- Braking techniques: different methods and when to use which ones.
- Overtaking skills: safe and responsible overtaking, including preparation and position.
- Looking ahead & anticipating: expanding your field of vision and thinking for tactical advantage.
- Insert and unload: act quickly and smoothly on the highway.
- Sweep & discourage: keep control in heavy traffic.
- Turning techniques: various methods with their advantages and disadvantages.
- High speeds & emergency stops: controlled driving under tension.
- Police vs. non-police behavior: recognizing, applying and switching between driving styles.
You train these skills intensively under realistic conditions, so that you can apply them automatically and responsibly during operational deployment.
What is the course format?
The Tactical Driving Training (OVR) course is designed for maximum practical focus and personal guidance, with the following features:
- Lessons in a small, personal setting: you ride with an experienced specialist instructor and only one fellow student.
- Day and evening rides: intensive practical experience both during the day and during an evening or night ride.
- Properly equipped vehicles: training in a fast (unobtrusive) class car.
- Care included: healthy lunch and dinner are provided during the training days.
- Teaching materials & reports: you will receive your own lesson folder with all the material and a thorough driving report afterwards.
This compact, practical setup ensures that you learn to maneuver in a safe and realistic environment under operational conditions.
What is the examination for this course?
Upon successful completion, you will receive an official certificate of participation, accompanied by a detailed assessment report showing your development on all assessed driving skills.
What can I do after obtaining this diploma?
After obtaining the Tactical Driving Training (OVR) certificate, you will have the specialist driving skills necessary to operate effectively, safely and unobtrusively during observational work. Specifically, you can:
- Responsible independent driving during tactical operations in both urban and rural areas, day and night.
- Collaborate within observation teams, where you can take on driving tasks such as tracking, sweeping, redeeming or repositioning.
- Assess risks and act tactically in traffic while maintaining discretion and safety.
What are the costs?
The costs for the Tactical Driver Training (OVR) are €2,750 excluding VAT (€3,327.50 incl. VAT).

- An intake interview (motivation, background and learning goals)
- A personality test and test for insight into intelligence, motives and team style
- An intest on traffic insight and driving skills
- Driver's license and ID check
- For private investigators: a valid yellow pass
- For government employees: a valid service ID
- Signing a Declaration of Integrity and Confidentiality
