Who is this course for?
This course is intended for anyone who wants to work as an observer, private investigator or private investigator in the private investigation or investigation.
Whether you're new to the field, coming from security or enforcement, or want to grow as a former police officer in a private detective agency.
The Private Investigator diploma is legally required in the Netherlands to apply for a POB permit or a yellow ID card. Without this diploma, you are simply not allowed to work as a private investigator or private investigator.
What are the pre-education requirements?
You don't need any specific prior education. However, it is important that you have a good command of the Dutch language, integrity, discretion and independence. The textbooks and exams are in Dutch.
What is the level of education?
The Private Investigator course is a theoretical course at mbo-3 level.
What is the study load?
The Private Investigator course is designed as a flexible home study, so that you can learn at your own pace. The total study load is an average of 24 to 40 hours, depending on your learning style and experience.
Most participants complete the course in 3 to 5 days of intensive study, spread over 2 to 3 months. You can also choose to distribute the study load over a longer period of time.
What am I going to learn?
During the Private Investigator course, you will learn everything you need to conduct independent and professional research within the legal framework. You will learn how to operate within the law as a private investigator, when your investigation is permitted and how to make investigation results legally useful. You will gain knowledge about:
- Private investigation laws and regulations (such as the Wpbr, AVG and criminal boundaries)
- Application of research methods such as observation, the use of cameras, GPS, and OSINT
- Practical skills such as conducting intake interviews, preparing reports and carefully recording findings
- Integrity, proportionality and subsidiarity in the performance of your work
What is the course format?
The Private Investigator course is offered as a self-study with personal remote guidance. This course is ideal for people with a busy schedule, side entrants or professionals who want to retrain or retrain independently. That means:
- You will receive the official textbook package by mail at home.
- You set your own learning pace and study where and when it suits you.
- You will receive practice assignments and exams to prepare for the SVPB exam.
- You will receive content support from a lecturer, who can be reached via email, phone or WhatsApp for questions about the course material or exam preparation.
- There are no classroom lessons or physical meetings; the focus is on independence.
What is the examination for this course?
The Private Investigator course fully prepares you for the official exam of the SVPB (Foundation for Professional Exams for Private Security Organizations). The exams are held at one of the SVPB locations in the Netherlands. After successful completion, you will receive the legally recognized Private Investigator diploma, which is required to apply for a POB permit or yellow ID card. Retakes are possible per part, according to the terms and conditions of the SVPB.
The exam consists of three parts:

- Basic knowledge • private investigation
- Investigation and reporting • private investigation
What can I do after obtaining this diploma?
With the Private Investigator diploma in your pocket, you meet the legal requirement to work as a private investigator, observer or private investigator in the Netherlands.
After obtaining this diploma, you will be able to:
- Apply for a POB permit from the Ministry of Justice and Security (for entrepreneurs)
- Request a yellow ID card from the police chief (for employees)
- Joining a private investigative agency
- Specialize in observation, interrogation/interview techniques or digital research
- Start your own private research firm
- Moving on to practical courses such as Surveillance Course(OT-C), Tactical Driving Course (OVR) whether Interview & Interrogation Techniques
What are the costs?
The costs for the Private Investigator course are €550 excl. VAT (€665.50 incl. VAT).
The exam costs are not included in the course price, charged by the SVPB and amount to €299, - excl. VAT (€361.79 incl. VAT) for all three exams.
